Despite being compared to Anglo-Saxon post-punk bands like Fontaines D.C. and Shame, the French band NASTYJOE, in producing their new EP titled "Deep Side of Happiness," looked to the West and developed a more American sound.
Through the six tracks that make up this concise yet intense work, the Bordeaux quartet unleashes all their aggression. Their heavy sound is influenced by various shades of rock: the currents that make up "Deep Side of Happiness" can be full of muddy distortions in the style of Mudhoney, noise attacks, or suffocating beats bordering on industrial. Despite their French nationality, NASTYJOE has made the decision to express themselves in English, giving us a singing style with interesting melodies but with somewhat inaccurate pronunciation.
Overall, the EP, while not particularly original, delivers good bursts of adrenaline that could satisfy fans of rough alternative rock.
