DOGFACE may have called it quits several years ago, but guitarist/producer Martin Kronlund has ensured the band’s legacy lives on with the release of “From The End To The Beginning”. This compilation gathers the best tracks from all three DOGFACE albums, newly remixed and remastered by Kronlund himself. With powerhouse vocalist Mats Levén (ex‑Yngwie Malmsteen, Treat, Candlemass) fronting the band, DOGFACE left behind a catalogue that deserves far more recognition than it ever received.
The origins of DOGFACE go back to the late ’90s, when Kronlund began writing material inspired by the classic hard rock of the ’70s and ’80s. Thin Lizzy was a major influence, but elements of Deep Purple, Rainbow, and other melodic heavyweights also shaped the band’s sound. Kronlund teamed up with keyboardist Anders Skoog (Gypsy Rose), whose newly acquired Hammond C3 organ became a defining part of the group’s sonic identity. Drummer Patrik Engelbrektsson and bassist Stefan Egeman completed the lineup.
Recording sessions for the debut began in 1998, but the band struggled to find the right vocalist — until Skoog brought in Mats Levén. His first recorded track, “You’re Taking Me Down”, instantly convinced everyone that they had found the missing piece. Levén’s soulful, Glenn Hughes‑influenced delivery became central to the DOGFACE sound.
Thanks to the support of Magnus Söderqvist, DOGFACE signed with MTM Music in Germany and released their debut, “Dogface Unleashed”, in 2000. Critics praised it as one of the strongest melodic hard rock albums of the year. Work on the follow‑up, “In Control”, began soon after, with Kronlund now operating a larger studio equipped with a classic SSL 4000E console — and Levén sporting a fresh new look.
After a long break, the band returned in 2013 with “Back On The Streets”, featuring some lineup changes but still driven by the core duo of Kronlund and Levén. Eventually, with Kronlund increasingly busy producing other artists, DOGFACE was put to rest.
Kronlund explains:
“We’re proud of what we accomplished. ‘From The End To The Beginning’ represents the songs that best define the DOGFACE sound. We hope fans feel the same.”
And he chose wisely. This compilation highlights the band’s strongest material — from the groovy punch of “Don’t” to the soaring melodic brilliance of “A Single Reason”, the atmospheric “Footsteps on the Moon”, the emotional mid‑tempo “I Will Be There”, the hard‑hitting “Right Between Your Lies”, and the irresistible melodic rocker “You’re Taking Me Down”.
“From The End To The Beginning” is a superb showcase of a criminally underrated Swedish hard rock band, packed with hooks, stellar musicianship, and world‑class vocals. A must‑have for fans of melodic hard rock, AOR, and anything featuring Mats Levén.
